Are brow lamination and lash lifts safe? Why a patch test matters

An honest look at brow lamination and lash lift risks: what they depend on (products, timing, hair condition, patch tests) and who should check with us first.

Are brow lamination and lash lifts safe? The honest answer is that it depends on how they are done. The things that matter most for a comfortable session are the right products, timing matched to your hairs, the condition of the hairs themselves and, where needed, a patch test. At our salon we carry out both services with products and timings suited to your hairs; below we explain what we pay attention to, what a patch test is for and who should check with us first.

How do brow lamination and a lash lift work?

Brow lamination and a lash lift work on the same principle: purpose-made solutions give the hairs a new shape, and that shape is then set. In brow lamination, the hairs are brushed in the direction you want and set in place; in a lash lift, your own lashes are curled over a small silicone pad.

First, a product that temporarily softens the hairs is applied and the hairs are brushed into their new shape; a second product then sets that shape. No false hairs, extensions or needles are used. As each hair sheds in its own natural cycle, a new one grows in its place, and the effect gradually fades. You can also find the steps of both services on our brow and lash services page.

What do the risks depend on?

No single thing decides whether brow lamination or a lash lift is comfortable; several factors work together.

  • Product choice: the products need to be made for brows and lashes and suitable for use around the eyes.
  • Timing: we adjust how long the solution stays on to the thickness and structure of the hairs. For fine, delicate hairs we keep it short.
  • Condition of the hairs: if the hairs are very fine, dry or brittle, the service may need to be simplified or postponed.
  • How often you have it done: repeating the service while the effect is still there can overwork the hairs. We usually plan the next session no sooner than 6-8 weeks later.
  • Protecting the eye area: we protect the area so that the solution does not touch your eyes or the skin around them, and your eyes stay closed throughout.

When these steps are followed with care, both services are comfortable for most people. Even so, you can develop a sensitivity to any product, so we cannot say they will suit everyone in the same way. That is why we plan every service to a personalised protocol, and the timing and the gap between sessions may differ for you.

What is a patch test and how is it done?

A patch test means trying the product on a small area of skin before the session. The aim is to see in advance whether you are sensitive to it.

The usual practice in the beauty industry is to apply the product to a small area, such as behind the ear, 24-48 hours before the session and to keep an eye on that area in the meantime. If you notice redness, itching or burning during that time, the service does not go ahead.

If you have sensitive skin or a known allergy, please let us know before your appointment; we may recommend a patch test first. We plan when and how to do the patch test together with you, ahead of the appointment.

Does a patch test rule out every reaction?

No. A patch test is a useful first check, but it cannot predict every reaction. A product that causes no reaction on a small patch of skin may feel different on a more sensitive area, such as around the eyes.

So, as well as the patch test, we often ask how you are feeling during the session. If you feel any stinging, burning or discomfort, just tell us straight away and we will stop there and then.

Who should check with us first?

If any of the following applies to you, please message us before your appointment. We will talk through together whether the service is right for you and, if needed, suggest waiting. If you are unsure, we recommend checking with your doctor.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Redness, irritation, itching, a stye or an open wound around the eyes
  • Recent eye surgery
  • A previous allergic reaction to brow, lash or tint products
  • Brow or lash loss with no known cause
  • Very dry, fine or brittle hairs
  • A skincare product recommended by your doctor that you use regularly

We do not ask these questions to put you off; we ask them so that we can plan the service around you. At our salon, brow and lash services are carried out by our expert team of qualified practitioners, who explain each step and look after your comfort throughout the session.

What is the aftercare for brow lamination and a lash lift?

The first few days after brow lamination or a lash lift matter, because this is when the curl or the shape settles. The advice below protects the look and is also gentler on your hairs.

  • For the first 24-48 hours, keep water, steam and make-up away from your brows and lashes, and avoid saunas, swimming pools and heavy sweating too. We will tell you what suits you at the end of your session.
  • Do not rub or tug at your brows and lashes.
  • In the weeks that follow, we can talk about supporting your hairs with nourishing care such as brow vitamin care.

If you notice redness, itching or swelling after the session, please message us; if needed, we recommend checking with your doctor. For the first few days after a lash lift, our lash lift aftercare guide takes you through what to look out for, step by step.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to lose a few brow hairs after lamination?

Yes. Brow hairs shed and renew themselves in a regular cycle, so losing a few is normal. We do brow lamination with a product and timing chosen for your hairs, so that they are shaped without being overworked. If you notice any unusual shedding, please message us.

How are my eyes protected during a lash lift?

Your eyes stay closed throughout the session, and the eye area is protected so that the product does not touch your eyes. If you feel any stinging or burning, we stop straight away. If you have a sensitivity around the eyes or have had recent eye surgery, please check with us first.

Can I have brow lamination or a lash lift every month?

No, we do not recommend it. To avoid overworking the hairs, we usually plan the next session no sooner than 6-8 weeks later, and we do not repeat the service while the effect is still there.

Can I have brow lamination or a lash lift while pregnant?

We decide that together with you. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend messaging us before the session and checking with your doctor; we will then talk through whether the service is right for you and, if needed, suggest waiting.
