Who is needle-free mesotherapy suitable for, and is it safe?

Needle-free mesotherapy does not pierce the skin and is comfortable for many, but with pregnancy, a pacemaker or an open wound we talk first. What to expect.

Needle-free mesotherapy is a facial without needles: a serum chosen for your skin is gently worked in from the surface with the help of a skincare device. For many people it is a comfortable session, but in some situations, such as pregnancy, a pacemaker or an open wound, we need to talk first. Here we explain who it suits, who should check with us first and how it may feel during a session.

How is needle-free mesotherapy done?

In needle-free mesotherapy, the skin is not pierced. We apply the serum to your face and neck, and the device head glides slowly over your skin to help work it in. At our salon, it is part of our skin renewal sessions.

The session starts with cleansing and a gentle renewal step. We then choose a serum focused on skin tone, hydration or radiance to suit your skin that day, and finish with a soothing step. A session usually takes about an hour, but because each one is planned to a personalised protocol, the steps, timing and frequency may differ for you. For the steps in more detail, see our post on what needle-free mesotherapy is and how a session works.

Is needle-free mesotherapy safe?

Offered to the right person and done in the right way, needle-free mesotherapy is a gentle facial that is comfortable for most people: no needles are used, the skin is not pierced and nothing is injected. What keeps it comfortable is that we know the condition of your skin and plan the session around it.

That is why every session starts with a short chat. We ask about the products you use, how sensitive your skin is and whether there is anything we should know. If we are unsure about anything, we simplify the session, postpone it or suggest that you check with your doctor first.

Who is needle-free mesotherapy suitable for?

Needle-free mesotherapy is worth considering for many people who want calm, regular care for their skin. People tend to choose it when they:

  • Feel their skin looks dehydrated or tired
  • Want to add an extra step to a professional facial
  • Are looking for a facial that uses no needles and works on the surface of the skin
  • Want to look after their skin before an important occasion
  • Want to go straight back to their day after the session

You can have it as a single session on its own or as one step of a professional facial. We talk through which suits you at the first consultation. To see what a professional facial involves, read our post on what happens during a professional facial.

Who should check with us first?

If any of the following applies to you, please message us before your appointment. We will look together at whether the session is right for you and, where needed, suggest that you check with your doctor.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (during this time we suggest a simpler facial instead of device-assisted care)
  • A pacemaker or any other electronic device in your body
  • Epilepsy
  • Open wounds, an active cold sore or irritation on the skin
  • A spot that is new, growing or changing in colour or shape (please see a dermatologist first)
  • Another intensive service you have had on your face recently
  • Regular use of retinol or acid-based skincare products

This list is for information only and does not replace a doctor’s assessment. Your sessions are carried out by our expert team of qualified practitioners, who explain each step and look after your comfort.

What does a session feel like?

A session is not expected to hurt. Some people feel a light tingling while the device is working, which is normal as the device head moves over the skin.

We ask how you are feeling throughout the session. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, we pause and adjust the session for you. At the first session, we look at how your skin responds and shape the following sessions around it.

What can you expect after a session?

You can go straight back to your day after a session; there is no need to rest. Sensitive skin may look slightly pink, but this usually fades quickly.

A few suggestions for afterwards:

  • On the day, wash your face gently with lukewarm water, and avoid rubbing your skin for the first 24 hours.
  • That day, avoid the hammam, saunas, steam rooms, very hot places and intense exercise.
  • Avoid facial waxing or other hair removal on the face for a few days.
  • Wear sunscreen every day, in winter too; spots can look more visible with sun exposure.

If the pinkness lasts a long time, or if you feel itching or burning, message us; where needed, we will suggest that you check with your doctor. For general advice after a professional facial, see our post on what to do after a facial; after a serum session, the suggestions above are enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is the skin pierced during needle-free mesotherapy?

No. The device head glides gently over your skin and the serum is worked in from the surface; the skin is not pierced.

I have sensitive skin. Can I have needle-free mesotherapy?

Yes, as long as you check with us first; for sensitive skin, we can plan a simpler session. Just let us know before your appointment how sensitive your skin is and which products you use; we also look at your skin at the start of the session and decide together.

I use retinol. Do I need to take a break before a session?

Yes, we suggest taking a break from retinol and products with a high acid content for the few days before your session. It is also best to avoid strong sun and sunbeds during those days. We can talk before your appointment about which product to stop and when.

How many sessions does it take to notice a difference?

It depends on your skin type and how regular your sessions are. A programme of regular sessions a few weeks apart is usually suggested, with the aim of helping your skin look more hydrated and fresher. We plan the programme and what you can expect with you at the first consultation, based on your skin.
