How often should you get a facial?

A facial every 4-6 weeks is the usual guide for most skin types. Here is how your skin type and the season can change that, and where home care fits in.

For most skin types, a professional facial is usually recommended every 4-6 weeks. That interval is not the same for everyone: your skin type, what your skin needs at the time, the season and your routine at home can all make it shorter or longer. Below we look at how often a facial might suit you, and how we decide on the interval together.

Why have regular facials?

Facials are spaced at regular intervals because the clean, hydrated feeling your skin has after a session gradually fades with everyday life. A professional facial brings deep cleansing, hydration and nourishing steps together in one session.

Regular facials make it easier to keep an eye on your skin over time. At each session we look at how your skin is on the day and choose the steps to match, so your facial keeps pace with what your skin needs as it changes.

How often should you get a facial for your skin type?

The general guide is a facial every 4-6 weeks, but your skin type can shift that. The examples below only give a rough idea: every facial is planned and carried out to a personalised protocol, so your own interval may differ. We settle on the right interval for you together, once we have got to know your skin.

  • Skin prone to oiliness and clogged pores: the interval may be a little shorter, because build-up can form in the pores more quickly.
  • Dry skin: a routine focused on hydration matters, and the interval can be a little longer.
  • Sensitive skin: the interval can be a little longer, and we plan a simpler facial.
  • Combination skin: we choose different steps for different areas, and the interval depends on the overall condition of your skin.

Our post on how to know your skin type explains how to recognise yours.

Do the season and your daily routine change the interval?

Yes, both the season and your daily routine can affect the right interval between facials. As the seasons change, especially in autumn and winter, skin can feel drier and more sensitive, while in summer the sun and heat change what it needs. At these times we can adapt the steps of your facial, or the interval, to suit.

Your daily routine matters too. A demanding job, frequent travel, wearing make-up for long hours or a spell of poor sleep can all change what your skin needs. Our post on autumn and winter care looks at how to plan your care as the seasons turn.

Can you book a one-off facial?

Yes, you can have a professional facial as a single session, for example before an important event or after a long break. If you wish, you can carry on at regular intervals afterwards.

You do not have to commit to a regular plan. When we suggest one, we explain our reasons clearly and leave the decision to you.

What should you do at home between facials?

A salon facial does not replace your skincare at home; the two go hand in hand. A simple routine between sessions makes it easier to look after your skin consistently.

  • Cleansing: use a gentle cleanser that suits your skin, morning and evening.
  • Moisture: regularly apply a moisturiser that suits your skin type.
  • Sun protection: wear sunscreen every day, including in winter.
  • Be gentle: avoid rubbing your skin hard and trying new products too often.

We explain how to plan the two side by side in our post on combining salon care and home care.

Can having facials too often overwork your skin?

Yes, it can: repeating steps such as exfoliation and blackhead removal too often asks too much of your skin, which needs time to rest between sessions.

That is why we set the interval according to the condition of your skin and, where needed, simplify some of the steps. If we think it is too soon for your next facial, we will tell you so plainly.

What should you tell us before booking?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an open wound, noticeable irritation or significant redness, use products containing retinol or acids, have very sensitive skin, or are under a doctor’s care for a skin condition or take medication regularly, please message us before booking; we will plan your facial around it. If you are unsure about anything, we suggest checking with your doctor first. Your sessions are carried out by our expert team of qualified practitioners, who explain each step and look after your comfort.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should you start having facials?

There is no set age; you can start whenever you want to begin looking after your skin. We choose the steps of your facial to suit your age and what your skin needs.

Should you have a facial every month?

Not necessarily. For most skin types, a facial is usually recommended every 4-6 weeks, which means roughly once a month for some skin and a little less often for others. We work out the right interval for you together, based on your skin and your daily routine.

How long does a session take?

A session usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. The time depends on what your skin needs and the steps we choose.

I have not had a facial for a long time. Where should I start?

After a long break, we begin the first session by getting to know your skin again. We plan the facial around how your skin is on the day, and talk together about how long to leave before the next one.
