Gel polish usually lasts 2-3 weeks. That is not the same for everyone: your nail type, how hard your hands work and what you do after your appointment all make a direct difference.
Below we explain in plain terms how gel polish is applied, what shortens that time, how to protect your polish day to day and why the way it is removed matters.
What is gel polish and how is it applied?
Gel polish is a type of nail polish that is set under a special lamp, coat by coat, and stays glossy far longer than ordinary polish. It does not dry in the air; it hardens under the light of an LED or UV lamp. That is why you can touch things straight after your session, pick up your bag and go.
At the salon, as part of our manicure and nail extension services, a gel polish session usually follows these steps:
- We clean your nails, file them to the shape you want and tidy the cuticles.
- We prepare the nail surface so that the polish holds well.
- A thin base coat goes on and is set under the lamp.
- Colour goes on in thin coats, and each coat is set separately.
- A protective top coat goes on last and is set one final time.
A session usually takes between 40 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the condition of your nails and the design you choose. If you are wearing old polish, we allow a few extra minutes to take it off first. How thin the coats are affects both how the polish looks and how long it lasts: thick coats can lift more easily at the edges.
If you are torn between gel polish and nail extensions, we set out the differences in our post on nail extensions or gel polish.
Why does gel polish not last as long on some people?
The same gel polish, applied on the same day, can last longer on one person than on another. There are a few reasons for this.
Your nail type
Some nails are thinner, more flexible or oilier than others. A flexible nail bends more during the day, which can make the polish crack or lift at the tips. If the nail surface is naturally oily, the preparation step matters even more.
How fast your nails grow
Gel polish often “grows out” before it wears out. As the nail grows, a bare line appears at the base. If your nails grow quickly, the polish may still be intact but will look ready for a refresh at around two weeks. If they grow slowly, the same polish can comfortably see you through three weeks.
How you use your hands day to day
Typing a lot, washing up often, gardening or using your nails to open things all wear down the edges of the polish. For someone whose hands are busy all day, 2 weeks is a realistic expectation; at a gentler pace, 3 weeks.
Hot water and chemicals
Long spells in hot water make the nail expand slightly and then settle back again. This repeated movement can make it easier for the polish to come away from the nail. Cleaning products and solvents can also dull the top coat.

How can you make gel polish last longer?
A few small habits make it easier to look after your gel polish:
- Avoid very hot water for the first 24 hours. It is worth waiting a day before a long, hot bath, a sauna or the pool.
- Wear gloves when you clean. Washing up and jobs involving detergent are when polish takes the most wear.
- Do not use your nails as tools. For jobs like opening a can or scraping off a label, reach for a proper tool rather than your nails.
- Use cuticle oil and hand cream. Keeping the skin around your nails moisturised helps your hands look cared for and makes the edges less likely to dry out.
- Do not pull at a lifted edge. If a corner of the polish lifts, pulling at it can take the top layer of the nail with it. If that happens, simply message us.
These tips do not mean your polish will last a set length of time; every nail is different. For most people, though, they help the polish stay neat for longer.
Can you remove gel polish at home?
Scraping or peeling gel polish off at home can damage the nail surface. Because the polish grips the nail firmly, forcing it off can lift the thin top layers of the nail along with it. The nail ends up thinner, and looks rough and more brittle.
At the salon, removal is slower and gentler:
- We gently take the shine off the top coat so that the remover can work its way into the polish.
- We place cotton soaked in remover on the nail, wrap the fingertip and leave it for a while.
- Once the polish has softened, we ease it off with a gentle tool, without forcing the nail.
- We clean away any traces, lightly smooth the nail and look after the cuticles.
It takes a little longer, but when gel polish is applied well and removed properly, your nails are less likely to become worn. If you are moving on to a new colour, the old polish can be removed and the new one applied in the same appointment.
When should you have gel polish redone?
Most people book an appointment to have their gel polish redone every 2-3 weeks. We plan and carry out every appointment to a personalised protocol for your nails, so the right interval for you may differ. A clear gap at the base, cracking at the tips or lifting at the edges all mean it is time. When lifted polish is left on the nail for a long time, water and dirt can get underneath, so it is better to bring your appointment forward a little than to wait.
Some people like to give their nails a short break between gel polish appointments. That is entirely a personal choice; in the meantime, a classic manicure and regular cuticle oil can keep your hands looking cared for. When should you check with us first?
If any of the following applies to you, please message us before having new gel polish done:
- There is redness, swelling, or a change in colour or texture on or around the nail
- You have an open wound, cut or irritation on your hands
- You have reacted to polish, gel or acrylic products before
- You have a known blood sugar or circulation condition
In these cases we may postpone the session and suggest you speak to your doctor first. Your gel polish is done by our expert team of qualified practitioners, who explain each step and look after your comfort throughout the session.
Frequently asked questions
Does gel polish damage your nails?
That depends largely on how it is applied and removed. When it is applied well and removed properly at the salon, your nails are less likely to become worn. What wears nails down most is scraping or peeling the polish off at home. If your nails are thin or brittle, tell us before your appointment and we will plan the session around them.
Are gel polish and nail extensions the same thing?
No. Gel polish is a thin layer of colour applied over your natural nail, and it does not change the nail’s length. Nail extensions are there to lengthen the nail or change its shape, and they need regular infill appointments; we cover what to look out for in our post on nail extension aftercare.
Can I glue a lifted corner back down at home?
We would advise against it. Moisture and dirt may already have got under the lifted part, and sealing over it keeps them in. Message us and we will see to it in a short appointment.
How often should gel polish be redone?
Most people have it redone every 2-3 weeks. A clear gap at the base, cracking at the tips or lifting at the edges all mean it is time. We will settle on the interval that suits you together.
